SOMABAY MAZEEJ HOTEL

Hurghada

Mazeej Somabay is a remarkable landscape where the stark beauty of the Egyptian desert converges with the vibrant embrace of the Red Sea. As the landscape architect, our vision was to create a design that grows organically from the land—a seamless dialogue between architecture and nature.

Set against a dramatic backdrop of ochre sands, rugged mountains, and shimmering turquoise waters, the site’s prevailing winds, intense sunlight, and scarce freshwater resources became guiding principles rather than constraints. Embracing these elements, we crafted a landscape that celebrates the site’s raw essence while offering luxury and comfort.

Inspired by the architectural philosophy of wabi-sabi—highlighting raw textures, simple forms, and the fluid integration of indoor and outdoor spaces—our landscape design extends this ethos outdoors. The central spine of Mazeej features thoughtfully crafted pathways and communal spaces made from locally sourced gravel and compacted earth, promoting natural drainage and minimizing impermeable surfaces.

Native, drought-tolerant plants frame these pathways—silvery Senna alexandrina sways in the breeze, Acacia tortilis casts dappled shade, and bursts of color emerge from succulents like Aloe vera and Caralluma species. Water, treated with care, is incorporated through xeriscaping principles and closed-loop water features, such as tranquil reflecting pools edged with sun-bleached stones, creating cool, serene microclimates.

Each residential unit—from twin villas and beach cabanas to lofts and stand-alone villas—features bespoke landscaping that prioritizes privacy and intimate outdoor living. Enclosed courtyards shaded by pergolas draped with flowering vines like Bougainvillea and Jasminum sambac offer secluded retreats, while terraces blur the boundaries between indoors and outdoors. Natural screening with Tamarix aphylla clusters and textured gabion walls filled with local stone define spaces while maintaining visual connections to the broader landscape.

The Mazeej Beach Platform balances functionality and sensitivity, supporting large-scale events with durable, low-maintenance materials like timber decking and crushed shells. Native dune grasses stabilize the sand, creating a smooth transition to the beach, while subtle lighting minimizes light pollution, preserving the coastline’s nocturnal beauty.

Material selection throughout Mazeej emphasizes natural, locally sourced elements—warm sandstone hues, rugged granite textures, and smooth beach pebbles—anchoring the design within its regional context and reducing environmental impact.

Mazeej’s landscape succeeds in evoking a profound sense of place, inviting residents and guests to connect deeply with the desert-meets-sea environment. It is a luxurious yet sustainable sanctuary where thoughtful design marries technical precision with the poetic narrative of the land.
