Case Study: SOLANA WEST COMPOUND
Client: Ora Developers Egypt
Location: New Zayed City, Egypt
Area: 334 acres
Scope: Master Planning, Landscape Architecture, Urban Design
Project Overview
Situated 35 km west of central Cairo, Solana West occupies 334 acres of flat terrain adjacent to the Al-Dabaa Corridor and near the Cairo–Alex Desert Road. In a rapidly developing corridor surrounded by vacant and forthcoming projects, this site offered a rare canvas for visionary landscape and urban design. Schaduf led the master planning and detailed landscape architecture—drawing on SB Architects’ concept—from initial schematics through tender documentation, crafting a sustainable community that resonates with its natural setting.
Challenges
- Contextual Identity: Establishing a distinct sense of place within a largely undeveloped region.
- Green–Infrastructure Integration: Seamlessly weaving extensive green corridors through future residential and mixed-use zones without disrupting circulation or parcel layouts.
- Programmatic Variety: Accommodating diverse recreational, social, and transit functions—parks, trails, water features, pedestrian and cycling routes—while maintaining a cohesive design language.
Solutions
- Interconnected Green Corridors: We devised a network of tree-lined boulevards and linear parks that anchor community clusters, linking them directly to major entries and the central lake frontage.
- Recreational Precincts: Strategically placed pocket parks, shaded promenades, and water plazas encourage outdoor activity and social engagement. Water features serve both aesthetic and micro-climatic roles.
- Sustainable Infrastructure: Native, drought-tolerant planting reduces irrigation demand. Permeable pavements and bioswales manage stormwater on-site. Dedicated pedestrian and cycling paths promote low-carbon mobility.
Outcomes
- Vibrant Community Fabric: Residents gain effortless, green-shaded connections between homes, amenities, and natural open spaces, fostering daily interaction with landscape.
- Ecological Enhancement: Green corridors function as wildlife corridors, improving biodiversity and strengthening local ecosystem resilience.
- Long-Term Livability: By prioritizing sustainable materials and native species, the design ensures low maintenance and enduring environmental performance.
Conclusion
Through strategic master planning and thoughtful landscape design, Schaduf has transformed Solana West into a model of sustainable urban living. Our integrated approach—melding green infrastructure with built form—creates a lasting legacy of ecological health, community vitality, and a strong sense of place in New Zayed City.
